It wasn't part of the default build until the 5.4 release. With 5.0.9, you're really looking at using "sh" and "exec" instead. The basic functionality is much the same - but the later "extend" code drew on several years experience with these earlier mechanisms to make things much more flexible, powerful, consistent and legal.
