You should *NEVER* use kill -9 except as a last resort. It is *NOT* the correct way to shut down a service. Always give a problem the chance to tidy up, save any persistent data, and shut down cleanly. Kill -9 means "shut down *now*, and don't worry about leaving things in a sensible state" It is for use in emergencies only. Not every day.
