snmpd ifOutOctets refresh

I am wondering how often the interface table stats are refreshed. I can see the number of octets going out getting updated fine when i run ifconfig eth0 but the reply from snmpd is updated maybe only every 10 seconds or so (even if I poll every second). Any ideas why ?
