Hi!

 

I am interested in sending SNMPv3 trap messages with a
certain engineID configured in snmpd.conf and probably hit a bug.

 

As Markus Hofer mentioned before, the securityEngineID configured
for a trapsess with ‘-e’ is used for the contextEngineID, not for the
msgAuthoritativeEngineID.

 

For me this is unexpected since the parameter ‘-E’ is for the
contextID, ‘-e’ should be the msgAuthoritativeEngineID in a sent trap packet.

 

Example:

# Session configured in snmpd.conf

trapsess -v 3 -e 0x8000000001020304 -E 0x80000000AABBCCDD -u
usr_MD5 -l authNoPriv -a MD5 -A password 10.16.10.11

# Captured at the receiver:

msgAuthoritativeEngineID: 80001f88805e3560af00017dc8,
contextEngineID: 800000000aabbccdd

 

Hence the agent’s msgAuthoritativeEngineID is still used (80001f88…
is the net-snmp prefix according to RFC3411)

Would anyone agree that the value of ‘-e’ should be used as msgAuthoritativeEngineID
(and for contextEngineID as long as no ‘-E’ is specified)?

Also pointed out by Markus Hofer, the tool snmptrap does use
the ‘-e’ value for the msgAuthoritativeEngineID!

 

I figured out in the code of agent_trap.c why this happens.
If it is considered a bug, I will provide a patch.
