terminology mixup

How does the "network interface" as reported by SNMP relate to the physical ports on a system ? Is there a one-to-one relation or something of the sort? I ask because, running snmpd in VirtualBox, I can see all the 'physical' cards that are connected to the system and one additional loopback port, which has no physical existence. But, the snmp agents running on my routers do not report back the same number of physical ports they have. In fact, they even report back "VLAN" and "BRG" interfaces too. I'm confused with this terminology. i.e. interface vs physical port. Why isn't it a one-to-one relationship? If anyone can help, or at the least, direct me to some reading material on the subject, it would be most appreciated.
