what to specify in an AgentX IndexAllocate request?

I'm in the process of implementing an AgentX library (in native Perl), and I've gotten to the point of implementing the IndexAllocate PDU/function. It specifies that you can provide a varbind list of 'index names and values requested for allocation'. Unfortunately this description is a little weak for me, and the RFC has no examples, nor could I find any elsewhere on the web. ... I had written some theories into this email, but then it got too complicated, so I deleted them again... Is there a better description anywhere, with examples of its usage?
