cannot install 5.6.1 due to no C Compiler error but it shows installed in SUSE

Hello,
    I tried following the instruction set forth for installing net-snmp(I'm very unfamiliar with Linux as this is our first one in our environment) version 5.6.1 in OpenSUSE 11.2 but it gets to a certain part where it looks for a C+ Compiler and says that it can't find one. According to YaST, it shows gcc version 4.3 and cpp 4.3 being installed(showing in red and I don't know what that means) in the /usr/lib64 folder. When I do the 'which gcc' command though, it says it doesn't exist. If anyone else has any info that I can try I'd appreciate it. Like I said, this is my first linux server(which we are using for OTRS production currently) and all I did was the basic install of the system. I thought SNMP would essentially install itself and all I would have to do is configure the snmp.conf file. I didn't seem to have this issue when setting up a linux server in VMWare. Thanks for any help that can be given.
