It's actually an "exception" - a pseudo-value associated with a particular varbind, rather than an error for the request as a whole. I've not had any experience myself with the perl (sub)agent, but an obvious thing to try would be setting the varbind to have the type SNMP_NOSUCH_INSTANCE.
