community name with special characters

Hello All, I am adding a community "benu1benu2benu3$enu4benu5benu6benu7benu8" in snmpd.conf file but I am not able to use snmpget through this community. Is this because, there is a special character '$' in the community name and if so, what are the special characters net-snmp will not allow for community name. Thanks.
