You might have better luck asking this on the Nagios support forum
(http://support.nagios.com/forum/).   They will know more about their
software than we do!

What is the "-r" option meant to do?

In our software, this is used to set the retry timeout, but I'm guessing
 that the meaning within Nagios is probably something different
