That will only work within the handler routine
(when you have a request to work with).
If I remember correctly, you're talking about how
to do this *outside* the handler routine.

You will have set up the table structure as part of the
initialisation routine - the simplest approach is to define
this as a file-global variable,  and then you can access
it from your other routines.
