Yes, it was, as I said in my update, access
control.  I traced it through to a debug
message like "no such com2sec entry" and figured it
out from there.

Would there have been a better way?  I guess obscure
responses are good for security.  Can one follow the
authentication procedure?

I'm very happy, though.  I've got MRTG monitoring
my device and haven't written a line of code yet(!),
but spent three days tearing my hair out writing
configurations!  (At which point the sample snmpd.conf
page started to make sense.  I don't imagine this is
an unusual path to snmp agent coder enlightement.)
