I suspect that the init.d script may be trying to invoke a vendor-supplied
version of the agent (typically /usr/sbin/snmpd),  which isn't there.

Try editing the file /etc/init.d/snmpd  and tweak the path of the
binary to point to your home-compiled version
  (i.e.  /usr/local/sbin/snmpd  instead of   /usr/sbin/snmpd)
