Scalar registration performance

Registering over 5000 scalars with snmpd from my AgentX takes 2-3 minutes, and in that time snmpd has a massive CPU load.
Is there any way to speed this up, and without having snmpd consume so much of the CPU? Even though it is only a few minutes, we are not keen on snmpd taking that much of the server's CPU.

I have tried both registering scalars one by one and registering scalars in group. It makes no difference on the performance.
