mac os x apparently not parsing mib specified on command line

i recently downloaded the v5.1 miss from vmware and attempted to have an snmpwalk load them … this is not happening … here's a simpler and smaller example of what's happening:

$ ls VMWARE-ROOT-MIB.mib
VMWARE-ROOT-MIB.mib
$ head VMWARE-ROOT-MIB.mib
-- **********************************************************
-- Copyright 2007-2010 VMware, Inc.  All rights reserved. 
-- **********************************************************

VMWARE-ROOT-MIB DEFINITIONS ::= BEGIN

IMPORTS
     MODULE-IDENTITY, OBJECT-IDENTITY, enterprises
        FROM SNMPv2-SMI;

$ grep -i vmwVirtMachines VMWARE-ROOT-MIB.mib
vmwVirtMachines OBJECT-IDENTITY
$ snmptranslate vmwVirtMachines -m VMWARE-ROOT-MIB.mib
No log handling enabled - using stderr logging
vmwVirtMachines: Unknown Object Identifier (Sub-id not found: (top) -> vmwVirtMachines)
$ 

fwiw … the above was executed on an iMac running mountain lion (10.8.2) :

$ uname -rsv
Darwin 12.2.0 Darwin Kernel Version 12.2.0: Sat Aug 25 00:48:52 PDT 2012; root:xnu-2050.18.24~1/RELEASE_X86_64
$ 

in the above i expected snmptranslate to use the supplied textual mib file for translation … any thoughts on why this did not happen?
