Extracting index(es) from response OID

I must be missing something - I've spent hours trying to figure out
what API call I should use. I am trying to extract indices out of a
response OID from a table MIB. Does an API call exist for this
operation? Maybe I should just convert the OID to ASCII and then using
string methods to extract the indices. I really figured that the API
would have some support for this.
