I guess you are talking about Indexes ( not indices).

The index is the last value after the last dot. i.e 1.2.3.4.5.6 = 123 , 6 is the index, 123 is the returned value
This index refers a table that is only valid for the MIB you are reading.
A same physical entity/interface ( i.e. a switch port), can be referenced by different indexes in different tables.
In the definition of the MIB you are reading you will find what table to use to finally ( maybe after several "correlation" ) find out the physical interface referenced.

I must be missing something - I've spent hours trying to figure out what API call I should use. I am trying to extract indices out of a response OID from a table MIB. Does an API call exist for this operation? Maybe I should just convert the OID to ASCII and then using string methods to extract the indices. I really figured that the API would have some support for this.
