SORRY FOR ANY DUPLICATES ... I'm just learning how to use this list.

Blessings Wes!

Thank you for your response. I'm mostly just an appliance user, and
with STDOUT/STDERR being transparent in (nearly all?) terminal windows I
never considered the possibility of any differences.

I have run Linux Mint Mate 64-bit LiveMedia from a locked Kanguru USB
thumbdrive for quite a few years. For various reasons, whenever I use a
new package, I always download the 'deb' file and write a loader script
and insert them into an 'app' partition on my boot drive and then
re-lock it. I have done this MANY times. The script ALWAYS checks to
see if the app is already installed and always uses some variation of:

[fetch app version to terminal] | grep -q [unique identifier]

"net-snmp" is the FIRST app EVER that has failed this procedure FOR ME
(YMMV). Since I hadn't ever encountered the STDERR alternative, it was
definitely a new problem for ME, and I thought it appropriate to relay
this information to the team.

I can understand your frustration as well ... it sounds like a good
question for Linus. Whether it is '--help' or '-V', I vote for the
STDOUT channel, but then I have no idea what that would mean to anyone
who does it the 'other way'.

In any case, THANK YOU ALL for net-snmp. It is a very handy utility for
my playground! Right now I'm working with a little managed switch and
my TV and Disc Player remote controls and an Arduino Pro Mini and a
Wiznet Ethernet dongle to CUT OFF the Ethernet to my "smart"(sic) TV
monitor that is ALWAYS busy doing "phone home" no matter what my Media
Computer system is doing - but - sometimes we use it for free Internet TV.

OK - Blessings in abundance, all the best, & Stay Well!
