New to writing plugins.

I want to write some custom plugins, but I have some ?'s.  And since I am a
sys admin and not a programmer, I am not sure if I am biting off more than
I can chew.  Basically, I want to know if I can write shell scripts and use
them as plugins.  If so, how do I pass output from the script into Netsaint
where current status and status information will be posted?  If this is not
possible please tell me what language I need to use to develop my own
plugins.
