Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Another angle on this matter is that if your MS services log accurate
messages to the 'Event Log', you can have these events sent to a syslog
server and then use any number of ways of checking for their presence,
or evaluating their content.

While a number of such products have been mentioned on this list, the
most successful I have seen is the 'Backlog' product from InterSect
Alliance Pty Ltd at http://www.intersectalliance.com/

Their product is

. Free

. GPLed (mmaybe ..)

. well supported

. supplied as a binary

. works for NT and Win2K (haven't tried the latter).

Here's an example of the log entries it writes

'...No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the
continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a
manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes
me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know
for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee...'
