Why not make it silent and less red (light-red, or orange or something like that) after it has been acknowledged? Advantage: you don't foget about it, like you would when it becomes hidden. And you are not alarmed by it either, because it does not make a sound, does not generate an SMS (or whatever) and is not red anymore.
