Remember the proxy is relaying your connection, which means that it dissects your request and then rebuilds it to make the backend request. I believe that in your case the proxy you are using (squid most likely) has been around for quite some time and caters for such minor mistakes, and then makes a correctly structured request when if fetches the source. If you be so kind as to do a tcpdump on the proxy, I would guess that this is the case. I very much appreciate the help, and realize that you have better things to do, so if there is anyone else that could test this (not through a proxy)and post the results I would love to know the outcome.
