also, remember that sendmail does not resolv via your /etc/hosts file, so if you are resolving mail.eiiecomm.com from the hosts file, it won't work.
you will have to make sure your DNS server can provide the resolution..

while you have rightly identified a potential cause of trouble (What's
the best thing about Notes ? It's not Exchange) it is probably not the
culprit here.

My employer's Notes installation happily accepts alerts from
Nag/Netsaint and delivers them locally.

Can this host (the one running sendmail) reach (ping) mail.eiiecomm.com
?

If not, correct the _routing_ problem and try again.

Once mail.eiiecomm.com is reachable, you should use use chec_smtp or
telnet mail.eiiecomm.com 25 to make sure that you can connect to the
Notes MTA.

BTW, you must have the Lotus SMTP MTA running on mail.eiiecomm.com; you
can't expect sendmail to deliver to a host running only the alien and
proprietary Lotus protocol (port 1352).
