There have been quite a few postings regarding a problem with a format
change to the ping command in some Linux distros and the check_ping
plugin. You don't mention your OS but Redhat had a changed ping command
from 7.2 or 7.3 (I can't remember which one precisely) onwards. There
are a few options, but the work around I prefer is to use the nagios
check_ping plugin which can handle the changed ping output. If you
search the archives for this list you will find a few answers.

Subject: [netsaint] check_ping command

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with probably a simple problem.
I cannot run the check_ping command from a command line. When I was
installing Netsaint, I was compiling the binaries, and when it got to
/bin/ping, it would lock up. Someone told me to put another switch on
that said, "ping -n -c 1", and then it did not lock up anymore. But
now, when I try to run the check_ping command, it gives me an error that
says, "ping -n -c 1, error: could not interpret output from ping
command". Can anyone help me with this? Thanks!
