Device locations mapped with status information

Hi all,
Is anyone monitoring a WAN or multiple sites around their country? I 
monitor sites all over the US and would like to have a map with all my 
locations marked on the map and have then change color depending on the 
status of the site. Has any tried this and if so, how did you do this and 
how does it work. 

The reason I want to do this is that I am monitoring many sites on a 
satellite network and when a site goes down I would like to be able to 
pinpoint that location quickly so I can check to see if they are having a 
weather related problem or if they are having other problems.

Ultimately I would like to have a real time moving weather map with the 
site locations overlaid on the weather map so I have all information at a 
glance. 

Anyone ever try this? Any ideas?
