I seem to be missing something here i tried your suggestion and got:

debian:/etc/netsaint# apt-cache search netsaint
netsaint-statd-plugins - netsaint_statd plugins
netsaint-statd-server - the netsaint_statd daemon (server portion)
netsaint - A host/service/network monitoring and management system.
netsaint-neat - A web frontend for NetSaint configuration.
netsaint-nrpe-plugin - NetSaint remote plugin executor (plugin)
netsaint-nrpe-server - NetSaint remote plugin executor (server)
netsaint-plugins - Plugins for NetSaint
netsaint-plugins-extra - Extra plugins for NetSaint (dummy package with dependencies).
netsaint-plugins-fping - check_fping plugin for NetSaint
netsaint-plugins-game - check_game plugin for NetSaint
netsaint-plugins-ldap - check_ldap plugin for NetSaint
netsaint-plugins-mysql - check_mysql plugin for NetSaint
netsaint-plugins-pgsql - check_pgsql plugin for NetSaint
netsaint-plugins-radius - check_radius plugin for NetSaint
netsaint-plugins-samba - check_smb plugin for NetSaint
netsaint-plugins-snmp - check_snmp and check_hpjd plugins for NetSaint
You have new mail in /var/mail/root
debian:/etc/netsaint#

so I thought perhaps the plugins or plugins-extra wasn't installed (plugins was)

then tried :debian:/etc/netsaint# /usr/sbin/netsaint -v netsaint.cfg

Check your configuration file(s) to ensure that they contain valid
directives and data defintions. If you are upgrading from a previous
version of NetSaint, you should be aware that some variables/definitions
may have been removed or modified in this version. Make sure to read
the HTML documentation on the main and host config files, as well as the
'Whats New' section to find out what has changed.

any Ideas

Subject: [netsaint] new user to netsaint 0..0.7 debian install

Hi I recently did a debian install

debian:/usr/local/src# apt-get install netsaint
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  netsaint
0 packages upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B/1484kB of archives. After unpacking 3719kB will be used.
Preconfiguring packages ...
Selecting previously deselected package netsaint.
(Reading database ... 19191 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking netsaint (from .../netsaint_0.0.7c-0.1_i386.deb) ...
Setting up netsaint (0.0.7c-0.1) ...
Reloading apache configuration.
Updating password for user netsaintadmin
Starting netsaint: netsaint.

I went through the doc and everything looks like it was set up cgi etc...

(other than /usr/share/netsaint/htdocs didn't have the html files they were all in /usr/share/netsaint/ index.html etc...)
then when I check the cat /var/log/netsaint/netsaint.log I get :

[1047405999] NetSaint 0.0.7 starting... (PID=32118)
[1047405999] Error: Service check command 'check_ping' specified in service 'PING' for host 'localhost' not defined anywhere!
[1047405999] Bailing out due to errors encountered while running the pre-flight check... (PID=32118)

so then I check check_ping to localhost itself:
 /usr/lib/netsaint/plugins/check_ping localhost 40 80 5.0 100.0
 PING OK - Packet loss = 0%, RTA = 0.00 ms
and
 /usr/lib/netsaint/plugins/check_ping 172.16.5.199 40 80 5.0 100.0
 PING OK - Packet loss = 0%, RTA = 0.20 ms

so check_ping to nodes works...

any Ideas were my prefilght problem lies?
