How to apply a diff patch

I just movied netsaint from a 7.2 box to a 7.3 machine, but now I get an
error with ping.  Looking on the messages,
I see that I need to apply this patch to check_ping using diff, but I'm not
sure I understand the procedure.  
Can someone run it by me?  An example of the syntax would be great.
