I am writing to thank you for your letter and say that you should be
posting to the Netsaint list and not to me _unless_ I explicity invite
you to do so.

The reasons are it is to your advantage to get replies from others to
ensure that you are getting sound and _safe_ advice; also it helps you
the writer be a bit more careful knowing that a whole bunch of people
could be reading what you say.

I think you are missing the port argument in the service definition - as
suggested by the error message.

Please check the syntax (passing arguments to service checks in the
docco) but IIRC you need

service[BSD]=TCP;0;24x7;3;5;1;freebsd-admins;120;24x7;1;1;0;;check_tcp!1521

(if 1521 is the port your Oracle DB is listening on).

Before you commit the change, please

1 check the docco to make sure I am not talking through my hat

2 run the check_tcp from the command line 

<path_to_Netsaint>/libexec/check_tcp TCP_address -p 1521

Here is what I see for an Oracle host named 'oradev'

tsitc> /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_tcp oradev -p 1521
TCP OK - 0 second response time on port 1521
tsitc> 

If in doubt, compare the results with what you get from either nmap or
telnet.

The Netsaint docco is good.
It is installed on your computer.
You must use it.
