right,  the problem is if you ask 12 lawyers, you get 12 answers so you
don't know much more than did before you asked.   and even when all 12
lawyers say you're not violating the patent that doesn't keep you from
being sued and having to hire a lawyer to defend yourself, so their
answer doesn't protect you in any way.

but to answer the original question:    some people have received letters
from the new owner of the patent requesting that they license the patent
or face a court filing.     but the patent owner didn't actually check to
see if they were using a system that violates the patent, just assumed that
they might.      in the case of nocat, the wording of the patent in my
reading doesn't say exactly what the nocat system is doing.  so in _my_
opinion, the patent doesn't apply.  my reading is that the patent is
specific on certain words and they apply to systems doing something
different than nocat, but if you use a broader concept of what certain
words sort of mean, only then could you suggest that the patent leans
over far enough to cover nocat.

in the end you'll have to read the patent yourself and make your own
judgement.  my opinion on that matter (or in my opinion the advise of
a lawyer) can't substitute for your own personal reading of at least the
claims portion of the patent.
