I have not had a response if this suggestion worked from the users that complained - but this was my response to them:

Internet Explorer will authenticate successfully because it probably works with the other components of SP2, it's a "known"
program. Maybe the SP2 Windows "firewall" is to blame. It probably allows IE to do things that other "programs" can't do...
like access port 5280. IE is probably a "trusted" program by default :-o

If you have sp2 try turning off the windows "firewall"
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/internet/sp2_wfintro.mspx

Maybe add firefox to the exception list
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/internet/sp2_wfexceptions.mspx

Like i said - this is a guess on my part... I am not about to install SP2 to test it....

Scott
