remote gateway

I have a two part question. 

1st is what do I need to do so that I can have a
remote gateway that talkes to the authinication server
across the internet. IE location 1 is in calf. and the
auth server resides in Alabama?

The next question is how many remote gateways can I
have setup? for one auth server like the above
sinario. I know that it will depend on the load that I
am putting across it I am just looking for a round
figure.
