best version of linux for embeded gateway

Is there a version of linux that I can load to a flash
that will work on a smaller device I.E same kindah
devices that m0n0wall uses. also it seems taht there
are only a handful of people that actualy respound to
the list. I would like to help in anyway posible. If
there needs to be any beta testing or a project that
the creator does not have time to do. I would be
willing to donate time. I don't know how to program
yet. I am teaching myself pyton right now. everyone
that I spoke with said learn it first. mabye pearl
next. anyway if there is any thing that I can do to
contribute back to noicat let me know..
