noffle --cancel '<msgid>' does NOT work just on requests, it removes the
overview as well.

Well, you could use a short perl script to delete the msgid from
/var/spool/noffle/requested/your.news.server, provided you've got write
access for this file. But it won't stop noffle from fetching subsequent
articles if the group has been subscribed to in "thread" mode.

Check the content of the header X-NOFFLE-Status. There's a SLRN macro in
noffle/docs/NOTES to mark only downloaded articles as read. The header
content "INTERESTING" means the article has been recently read or
requested for download.
