That very thread was the last thing I tried this morning. It didn't work 
either.

I suspected that it could be because we have 0/0 and ::/0 pointing to 
Null0 in our DFZ on the box. So I changed that and pointed it to 
something useful, and still, the default route would not import into the 
VRF.

I then decided to walk away from IOS XR and move to Junos.
