FWIW I created https://git.openldap.org/openldap/openldap/-/merge_requests/745 — ready (and happy) for review ☺️

Of course I didn't open a new issue but I referenced this MR on the existing one (ITS#10160).

The MR is more or less the patch I attached to the issue, I just reworded some text and added some (very) basic tests.
