terminology cleanup

I've done a pass for RE24 at cleaning up terminology around replication 
which should make things a lot less confusing, as we were using various 
terms interchangably w/o much explanation.

I've put this up for review at

It'd be great to have a few people look over it as it touches a lot of 
stuff.
