OpenNMS 1.7.0 (Unstable) Released

Gang:

Along with the release of 1.6.2 we are releasing 1.7.0, the first  
development release of what will become 1.8.0. This is an unstable  
release and is meant to be more of a technology preview than to be  
used in production. For those of you who were used to using 1.3 and  
1.5 in production *this is not the same thing*. Not until 1.7 is more  
mature should it be considered for production use, although we welcome  
and hope people will install it on a development server and give us  
feedback.

The following is a partial list of changes in 1.7.0:

Architectural Changes

o OpenNMS was updated to use Spring 2.5.

o DAO Updates: Many more parts of the OpenNMS data access layer have  
been updated to be compatible with Hibernate and database abstraction.

o OSGi Preparation: Some daemon architectural changes have happened to  
support an eventual integration with OSGi. (post-1.8)

o Test Framework Updates: A number of handy annotation-based test  
framework changes have been made using JUnit.

New Features

o RESTful Interface: A number of interfaces to OpenNMS data have been  
made available through a RESTful interface, using the Jersey API.

This includes simple web API access to alarms, events, nodes,  
notifications, and outages, and it is expected that this will be  
expanded in future releases.

o Capsd Replacement: A complete replacement for Capsd, called  
"Provisiond" is introduced in this release. It allows you to define  
specific behaviors for detecting services and attributes of devices in  
manual, automated, and semi-automated ways, with simple APIs for  
writing your own custom scanning behavior and detectors.

This includes a highly-scalable, highly-parallelizable threading  
architecture which will be used for other parts of OpenNMS in future  
releases.

o RADIUS Authentication: A RADIUS authentication provider has been  
added.

o Mobile Browser Cleanups: Some updates have been made to the web UI  
to make them more mobile-friendly.

o Adobe AIR Client: An Adobe AIR based client was added.

o WMI Support: Support has been added for polling and datacollection  
from Windows Management Instrumentation.

Since you are probably curious, we are hoping to have 1.8.0 released  
in the first half of this year.

We're pretty excited about this release and hope it can serve as a  
great example of what a talented and dedicated community can  
accomplish using a purely open source development model. As always,  
please try it out and we hope you find it useful.
