It's time for This Week in OpenNMS. This week we worked on the new
unstable release, the iPhone app, and the SMS API.
Project Updates
---------------
- Stable: Current Release is 1.6.5
1.6.5 is the current stable release, released May 16th. It fixes a
number of bugs, and adds a few features. For a full list, see the
bugzilla 1.6.5 milestone. This is a non-critical but recommended
upgrade for anyone on OpenNMS versions older than 1.6.5.

- Unstable: Current Release is 1.7.6
1.7.6 is the current unstable release, tagged August 3rd. Since 1.7.5,
there have been a ton of bugfixes, as well as updates to the RESTful
interfaces, inventory report updates, syslogd updates, collection
updates, new OpenManage and Cisco IP-SLA monitors, thresholding updates,
provisiond updates, map updates, and probably more stuff I'm missing. A
1.7.x overview is available in the release notes on the site.

- Unstable: iPhone App Development
I've almost got the iPhone app to a 1.0 level, I've managed to work out
the issues I was having last week, and can now acknowledge alarms from
the app. I've gotten some great suggestions of features for the future,
but for now I'm going to spend some time polishing things up, and
converting some of my data storage to CoreData instead of keeping
everything in memory.
- Unstable: 1.7.6 Bugfixes
The release is finally happening today because we ran into a few
high-profile bugs that have been fixed up now. In some cases, nodes
being provisiond did not properly delete old interfaces. Also, there
was a shutdown issue related to some recent changes in Syslogd. Finally
an N^2+1 issue in data collection was resolved, which should speed up
collection on nodes with large numbers of interfaces considerably.
- Unstable: SMS Pinger/Request-Response API
Matt, Donald, and Jeff have been coding furiously on the SMS APIs,
including doing some initial work of converting OpenNMS to be more
OSGi-friendly.
Warning: VMware ESX 3.5 SNMP Daemon Crash
-----------------------------------------
VMware ESX 3.5 (including U4, and so far up to build 176894), out of the
box, runs a very old version of Net-SNMP which has a bug that causes a
core dump from a divide-by-zero error when presented with certain kinds
of queries. OpenNMS 1.6.5 (and probably other releases, and other SNMP
tools beside OpenNMS) can exercise this bug in some cases.
It is recommended that you apply the most recent net-snmp update from
RHEL3 or it's equivalent CentOS version to resolve this bug. For more
details, see OpenNMS bug #3151:

Until Next Week...
------------------
It may not look like much from the bullet points, but it's been a crazy
week of prepping for release, and pushing it back as we found blocking
issues. I'm glad to be finishing up 1.7.6 now, and will be attempting
to prep for 1.6.6 this week.
As always, if there's anything you'd like me to talk about in a future
TWiO, or you just have a comment, criticism, or feature-complete 1.8
codebase you'd like to share, don't hesitiate to say hi.
