It's time for This Week in OpenNMS <http://www.opennms.org>. In the last
week, we did some more work in preparation for 1.8.1, worked on the
iPhone/iPad app some more, and other bugfixing.
Project Updates
* *1.8: Current Release is 1.8.0*
1.8.0 is the current stable release, tagged June 7th. The first
major stable release in the 1.8 series, it adds a whole slew of
new features compared to 1.6. For a high-level overview, see the
"New and Noteworthy" page on the OpenNMS wiki
<http://www.opennms.org/wiki/New_and_noteworthy#New_in_OpenNMS_1.8>.
While we consider this release to be stable, a ton has changed. It
is recommended that you back up your database, and test an upgrade
on non-production hardware before moving to 1.8 in production.
* *1.8: Hibernate Updates*
Seth did some work optimizing the Hibernate queries used for the
remote poller maps.
* *1.9: Port JEXL Code*
Seth ported the JEXL code recently introduced in trunk away from
the JSR223 API, so that we can continue to support Java 1.5.
* *1.8: Remote Poller Map Updates*
Donald, Matt, and I have been working on the remote poller code
some more. Matt and I are working on refactoring and cleaning it
up some; Donald added support for click and double-click handling.
* *1.9: MAC Address Handling*
Seth worked on handling OCTET-STRING MAC addresses in traps.
Bugs Fixed Since Last TWiO

iPhone and iPad Beta Testers Wanted
I've wrapped up what will become version 1.0 of the OpenNMS iPhone
application. I'd like to get some iPhone and iPad beta testers,
especially people on older iPhone OS releases (the app supports as low
as 3.0) or using older hardware, like the original iPhone 2G and iPhone
3G. Depending on feedback, we'll send it to the app store in the next
couple of weeks.
If you are interested in helping test it out, we have a limited number
of developer slots on our iPhone development account that we can hand
out (first come, first serve). We'll add you as an OpenNMS iPhone
developer, and you will have the ability to distribute the app to your
own devices.
If you already have an iPhone developer account for your own use, you
can build and install the iPhone app right now, by following the
steps here <http://www.opennms.org/wiki/IPhone_Client#Building>.
For those of you who have already received this notice and responded to
me, don't worry, you're on the list. I'm still working out the best way
to do Ad-Hoc distribution. You'll get an email soon about the next steps.
Upcoming Events
* July 7th-9th, 2010: Ben will be speaking at OpenStreetMaps' State
of the Map 2010 <http://stateofthemap.org/>, in Girona, Spain.
* July 21st, 2010: Tarus will be giving his "So, You Think You Want
to Start an Open Source Business?" talk at OSCON
<http://www.oscon.com/oscon2010/public/schedule/detail/13160>
* July 26th-30th, 2010: OpenNMS Dev-Jam 2010
<http://www.opennms.org/wiki/Dev-Jam_2010> will be held at the
University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN
If you have anything to add to the events list, please let me know
<mailto:[email protected]>.
Until Next Week...
As always, if there's anything you'd like me to talk about in a future
TWiO, or you just have a comment, criticism, or actual working Ad-Hoc
iPhone distribution instructions that work that you'd like to share,
don't hesitate to say hi <mailto:[email protected]>.
