It's time for This Week in OpenNMS <http://www.opennms.org/>. In the
last few weeks we worked on reporting, IPv6, system feedback, and maps.

  Project Updates

    * 1.8: Current Release is 1.8.7 (Chuck-will's-widow)
      1.8.7
      <http://www.opennms.org/documentation/ReleaseNotesStable.html#opennms-1.8.7> is
      the current stable release, tagged 8 December 2010. For a complete
      list of changes and updates, see the "New and Noteworthy" page on
      the OpenNMS wiki
      <http://www.opennms.org/wiki/New_and_Noteworthy#New_in_OpenNMS_1.8.7>.
      As always, it is recommended that you back up your database before
      upgrading.
    * 1.9: Current release is 1.9.3 (Recorder)
      1.9.3 is the current unstable release, tagged 7 December 2010.
      This release is not recommended for production use, but for
      developers and users who want to try out the very latest features.
    * Donald has done a ton of fixing and polishing to the new CIO
      reports, and added a new Event Analysis report. If you couldn't
      get these reports to run in 1.8.7, he probably fixed whatever
      issue was stopping you.
    * Jeff made it so that information on an the last uncaught exception
      in the webapp automagically populates the form for Ben's new
      OpenNMS Commercial Support ticket portal.
    * Ben made assorted tweaks to the Provisiond asynchronous detectors,
      mostly related to finalization and garbage collection.
    * Seth made several bug fixes and enhancements to the node, event,
      and other ReST web services.
    * Seth fixed some NullPointerException-related bugs in Linkd.
    * Ben did some logging cleanup, eliminating calls to
      printStackTrace() outside the unit tests. That should placate the
      Java haters!
    * Ben added an embedded DNS server to the unit test harness so that
      we can test our DNS protocol monitor and related classes even when
      no Internet connection is present.
    * Tarus made assorted fixes to several SNMP trap-derived event
      definitions.
    * Alex Bennée contributed a small build system tweak (explicitly use
      BASH) that makes a big difference on recent Ubuntu and upcoming
      Debian releases.
    * Donald added the ability to export an online or batch report in
      CSV format.
    * Seth made a fix to the Spring Security-based LDAP authorization
      code that should make group-based role assignment work more nicely.
    * Donald fixed a problem that caused the batch-report graphics
      resolution to suck.
    * Seth, Matt, and Ben have continued the long slog toward IPv6
      support, which we expect to be the hallmark feature of the next
      stable release.
    * Matt made much headway toward reimplementing OpenNMS' ICMP support
      using Java Native Access (JNA). When completed, this work will
      eliminate the need for the JICMP library on most platforms.
    * Alex Bennée and his colleagues at Cambridge Broadband Networks
      contributed an OpenLayers-based geo-location aware status map
      view. The code will need refactoring for compatibility with
      user-based ACLs, so it may be some time before its release debut,
      but it's too cool not to mention:)

  Issues Fixed

    * [NMS-783 <http://issues.opennms.org/browse/NMS-783>] -- iplike
      does not combine ranges and commas
    * [NMS-3756 <http://issues.opennms.org/browse/NMS-3756>] -- Invoking
      rest method with orderBy triggers sql error

      fonts when running newly commited reporting stuff in 1.8.7
    * [NMS-4312 <http://issues.opennms.org/browse/NMS-4312>] -- Asset
      adapter does not store Hex-STRINGs
    * [NMS-4321 <http://issues.opennms.org/browse/NMS-4321>] --
      PSQLException -- Configure SNMP Data Collection per Interface
    * [NMS-4327 <http://issues.opennms.org/browse/NMS-4327>] --

    * [NMS-4351 <http://issues.opennms.org/browse/NMS-4351>] -- generic
      values wrong for certain OIDs in Cisco2.events.xml
    * [NMS-4357 <http://issues.opennms.org/browse/NMS-4357>] -- Package
      building fails on Ubuntu due to default shell usage

  Upcoming Events

    * 28 February through 4 March 2011: The OpenNMS Group will be
      offering training at the OpenNMS HQ in Pittsboro, NC. Details are
      available at the OpenNMS.com training page
      <http://www.opennms.com/training/>.

  Until Next Week...

As always, if there's anything you'd like me to talk about in a future
TWiO, or you just have a comment or criticism that you'd like to share,
don't hesitate to say hi <mailto:[email protected]>.
