I updated the log4j jar to the latest 1.2 version 
(log4j-1.2.14.jar) and also updated commons-logging.jar 
(to commons-logging-1.1.1.jar) and things are much better 
now.  There are a lot fewer logs (maybe 1/10th). 
 Apparently, earlier versions of these modules did not pay 
attention to the log level.
