Hi Norbert,

   Are you able to provide an example copy of categories.xml and 
surveillance-views.xml from OpenNMS's config directory (e.g. 
/etc/opennms )?

I've never built views using a GUI, but mine work even if the category 
doesn't exist. In my XML I make use of the 'catinc' rule - Just 
interested to see if the auto-generated XML is doing something odd in 
your case.
