I have fixed the issue, so it makes sense to answer my own question.

The problem with HTTPS was down to JDK 1.8u171 security settings for 
TLS.  Commenting out jdk.tls.disabledAlgorithms and 
jdk.tls.disabledAlgorithms, following opennms service restart solves the 
problem with HTTPS.

In my case on CentOS7 I had to edit 
/usr/java/jdk1.8.0_171-amd64/jre/lib/security/java.security file from 
Oracle JDK 1.8.

Older devices do have SSLv3 or earlier and bogus certificates, so it 
makes sense to disable those security restrictions in case of legacy 
devices sitting in local net.
