It is my understanding that flows are sent from a device to a collector. Generally speaking, the collector listens on UDP port 2022 for incoming flow data from a router or firewall and stores it in a database. SNMP is not involved other than to collect the basic information about network design, MAC and IP addresses, services, etc... OpenNMS would then make sense of the flow data by using the SNMP information collected. From what I’m reading, because of the amount of data, elastisearch is considered as the database to store the flow data. Most of this I found in the OpenNMS Drift project. OpenNMS-helm has a new “flows” plugin for Grafana. I’m hoping I can use Grafana to view the flow data through OpenNMS so it makes sense. There isn't a way to directly query netflow with SNMP. It is a different technology. It would attempting to query RRD data with SNMP. You *can* collect some statistics about flow data with SNMP. On the Cisco side, you will likely want to use default configurations for your netflow export. There have been some changes to how this works across versions and types of IOS, and there are a number of ways to configure your export data. I don't know if OpenNMS allows for custom flow structures within the different standards.
