are there really any java exceptions in the log files? And how long did you wait for OpenNMS coming up? How many jrb files do you have?

When you change to rrd ALL measurement files need to be recreated. If there is a lot of them, this might take some time. The start script is waiting for a certain time span (configurable in opennms.conf, if I remember well) and then exits with "started" of "failed". When the start takes too long you will see "failed", even when OpenNMS will come up some minutes later.
