Re: discovery of nodes with secondary IPs stay as multiple nodes

It looks like "secondary IP addresses" do not show up in snmp's iptable list (at least on both Cisco and Arista).    

When you force an opennms snmp rescan on a device, it will add or remove any regular ips if you made any changes, but ignore the pesky secondary IPs.  The only time a secondary IP sticks around is if they are opennms's primary monitoring ip for the device.

I'm throwing this out there to get a read if this is expected behavior, if I'm missing something/doing it wrong, or if opennms should do an additional merge on suspect nodes that match other snmp criteria (lldp/chassis serial/etc).  I can open a bug accordingly.

Hi Dave,

if you just want to discover new hosts and not new switches - why not add the switches using provisioning and activate discovery afterwards? Adding a switch with his "primary" ip should discover all ip's on this switch, so discovery should not add new nodes afterwards.

And did you try a manual rescan of one of the duplicate nodes? 

If I remember well automatical merging of discovered nodes worked already quite a few years ago. But it is always a bit tricky - which of the discovered ip's should be taken as the primary address of a node? Caution: having a system with multiple interfaces in the same ip subnet might also lead to ip problems like asymmetrical routing etc., some systems really don't like this.

You might open an opennms bug for this, too.
