Re: why this small datacollection-config.xml is not valid in opennms?

you have the error message in your logs:
Caused by: org.exolab.castor.xml.MarshalException: unable to find
FieldDescriptor for 'group' in ClassDescriptor of snmp-collection{File:
file:/usr/share/opennms/etc/datacollection-config.xml; line: 18; column: 49}

So I think your missing the <groups> </groups> tabs outside of <group>.
Next you have no <systems> tag.

the config you wrote below you posting looks syntactically better to me.
Make sure you don´t forget some xml parts.
