Distributed Maps

Can someone explain to me about the distributed maps? My monitoring consists of all routers and it appears as if you must install a poller on the client side for this to work? What I am trying to accomplish is to build a network map showing links, paths etc. I see there is the maps link as well which does not look anything as nice as the distributed maps. I entered the locations for a few sites in monitoring-locations.xml and these sites do appear however they are in the unknown status with monitors: 0 started, 0 stopped, and 0 disconnected.
