In particular it isn't going to do you any good to split the DB and OpenNMS services if they end up sharing the same physical disk drive. Disk head competition isn't something you can virtualize away. How much it matters will depend partly on the the VM guest's drivers and partly on the scale of your network that you are monitoring.
