SMTP Monitoring

PREFACE:  I am very new to OpenNMS and somewhat new to open source altogether.  Your patience is appreciated.

Hello,
I have a clean OpenNMS install (latest stable release) on a VM running Server 08 R2.  I have added nodes (public IP addresses of various client networks we monitor) which report back on the services running on the nodes (in our case Cisco ASAs).  Here, I have some inconsistent results.  For example, I have the SMTP service showing up and being monitored on a separate installation of OpenNMS on a different VM for a particular node but for some reason on the current VM monitoring the same node I don't see an entry for the SMTP service.

I checked the capsd-configuration and poller-configuration files and both look correct and whenever I do rescan on the node the SMTP service never shows up.  Any ideas where else I might check?
